Arnold Has Democrats to Thank on Energy
Let's not forget that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger came into office by slandering then-Gov. Gray Davis and distorting his record. But as the years have gone by, California has learned just how dishonest Schwarzenegger's campaign really was. Specifically on energy policy, Davis and the courageous Democratic agenda is now insulating California from some of the worst effects of energy industry price gouging. That agenda was attacked repeatedly by Schwarzenegger, who was a close ally of top Enron executives, and who has taken massive amounts of campaign contributions from the energy industry. Now in office, Schwarzenegger has dragged his feat on continuing Democrats' legacy on energy - and that risks the long-term energy security of California. The contrast could not be more stark - Democrats were willing to take political risks to protect California. Schwarzenegger takes orders from his energy industry backers, regardless of how it endangers the Golden State.

Are You Going to a Reunion?
On Saturday, Democrats will hold over 40 "Democratic Reunion" events across California to kick off the final 100 days of the November election campaign. At picnics, barbeques and canvassing events, California Democrats will meet candidates and organize their communities to ensure that the Party's large registration advantage is used effectively to propel Democrats to victory election on Election Day.
Sponsored by the Democratic National Committee and the California Democratic Party, the reunions will encourage activists to each contact 100 voters and spread the Party's hopeful message: "Together, we can do better."
"These reunions are a great opportunity to activate California's Democrats and rally behind our candidates," said California Democratic Party Chairman Sen. Art Torres (Ret.). "This early aggressive field organizing will ensure that California remains a 'blue state' this November and beyond."

No More Stunt Men: Arnold Does His Own Flips And Turns
From Jeff Millman, Press Secretary, CDP Democratic Victory 2006:
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s daily flip-flops on immigration continued yesterday, providing his third position on immigration in as many days.
On Wednesday, Gov. Schwarzenegger spoke against the Minutemen vigilantes who break the law at the border, saying, “I'm against the idea that people have to go and do the jobs themselves.” (Orange County Register “Total Buzz” column, July 26, 2006)
Yesterday’s position on the Minutemen vigilantes is a change from just two weeks ago, when he told the Los Angeles Times, "I support any time that a civilian wants to go and do the job that law enforcement cannot do." (Los Angeles Times, July 12, 2006)
And yesterday’s flip-flop on immigration comes after Tuesday’s flip-flop, after being confronted with an “intensity of prejudice” among the crowd which included Minutemen supporters. (Los Angeles Times, July 26, 2006)
Tuesday’s flip-flop comes after his flip-flop on Monday, where he told La Opinion that his earlier position supporting the divisive Prop. 187 was now “the wrong position.” (La Opinion, July 25, 2006)
Clearly Gov. Schwarzenegger just can’t help himself, because yesterday’s flip-flopping didn’t end there. Incredibly, Gov. Schwarzenegger flip-flopped about his flip-flopping within the same interview with the Orange County Register Editorial Board!
He told the Register: "I have not changed on any of my positions," just one day after he changed his position on immigration. (Orange County Register, July 27, 2006)
Then, within the same interview, Schwarzenegger said “there were many issues I had to think about where I stand,” and “as time goes on, you flesh it out.”
Gov. Schwarzenegger’s pandering makes clear that why we’ll never know his true position on immigration; at least we know where he stands on flip-flopping. He’s for it everyday!

Young Dems, Popsicles and The Gov

Let Them Eat Popsicles
From Roger Salazar, Communications Director, CDP Democratic Victory 2006
The Governor’s office released a fact sheet yesterday with tips on how to survive California’s heat wave.
Listed among the suggestions are these gems of public policy genius:
“Dress in lightweight loose fitting clothing.”
“Encourage frozen treats such as ‘Popsicles’ between meals.” (Fact Sheet: Tips from State Agencies on How to Survive the Heat, Governor’s Office, 7/24/06)
Californians are suffering a record-breaking heat wave that has already caused death, brownouts and threatens the capacity of our energy infrastructure. “Gripped by a 10th straight day of 100-degree heat, California sweated out the possibility of more blackouts Tuesday as the number of suspected heat-related deaths climbed to at least 38...” (A.P., July 25, 2006)
While Californians are struggling to deal with the heat and the state is in desperate need of a long-term comprehensive energy plan that includes conservation strategies and investment in renewable fuels…our Governor suggests muu-muus and popsicles.
While California is burning, Arnold is fiddling. Instead of marshalling the state's emergency resources, he's bouncing around in a campaign bus and suggesting we eat popsicles.
BTW - The Governor also ordered state agencies to keep all thermostats at 78 degrees, a practice he himself ignores.
According report in the Sacramento News and Review, “A source at the state Department of Conservation (DOC) recently described…the deep-freeze conditions instituted in honor of a recent visit from the Governator to the Renaissance Tower at 801 K Street. ‘Due to Schwarzenegger’s scheduled visit to the 20th floor of the department at 10:30 this morning, the building temperature was reduced to 60 degrees Fahrenheit ‘because that is the way the governor likes it…’” (Sacramento News and Review, July 15, 2004)
No word on whether he ordered a dozen fudgesicles for the room.

Twins II: The Arnold and W Show
In his bid for re-election, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing what made him famous: he's acting. He's acting like he's not close to President Bush, even though in more ways than one he is one of the President's closest allies. Schwarzenegger has not only governed like the right-wing ideologues who now populate the White House, he has brought in the Bush team to run his re-election campaign. And no matter how much he tries to hide the truth, the fact remains: Schwarzenegger is a Bush clone.

Arnold's Stem Cell Two-Step
From Roger Salazar, Communications Director, CDP Democratic Victory 2006

Youth in Action
From Brian VanRiper, California Young Democrats:
California Young Democrats has been traveling with the Vans Warped Tour for the California leg of the concert. Going through seven cities in eight days, they registered hundreds of young voters, and took "voting pledges" from over a thousand young concert-goers. CYD was the only political partisan non-profit group to take part in what is the premier concert for 14-25 year olds. Joining other non-profits such as Amnesty International, Planned Parenthood, NRDC, Surfrider foundation, and the ONE campaign, CYD brought a Democratic message to young voters. The CYD teams at each event also handed out Angelides for Governor literature and stickers, and answered questions why a young voter should vote out Arnold in November. CYD would like to thank Sumner Komro of the Warped Tour for helping them get situated at every show.

Samantha MacLaren helps Ryan from Pomona register to vote. Ryan turns 18 in September and he didn't realize that he was eligible to register to vote before then. In total CYD registered 54 young Democrats who turn 18 within the last three months leading up to the election.

Samantha MacLaren, Zach Warma, Alissa Nadel and Aaron Hirsch before the first show in San Diego. They registered 27 Democrats that day, and got young voters talking about Phil for Governor. They also signed up nearly two hundred 14-25 year olds for the CYD mailing list.

The Bush Family Money Tree Shakes For Arnold
With tickets going for as much as a hundred grand, that's a whole lotta shaking going on, as Bush Sr. goes to bat for Arnold today with two big money fundaisers -- probably just part of the payback for Arnold going the distance for Bush Jr. in Ohio during the 2004 election.
Local Dems, activists, and the nurses will be on hand to show Arnold what's really important to Californians.
Might look something like this:

If The Ticket Fits . . .
From Roger Salazar, Communications Director, CDP Democratic Victory 2006
We find the GOP's criticism of Phil Angelides in the Capitol Morning Report today rather amusing. It's funny that the GOP would be attacking the Democrat for his supporters, when the Schwarzenegger-endorsed Republican ticket is as far out of the mainstream as Arnold himself.

Schwarzenegger: Bought and Paid For
From Roger Salazar, Communications Director, CDP Democratic Victory 2006
On Tuesday, Governor Schwarzenegger was joined by “California business leaders” as they announced their support for his alleged, “commitment to keeping the state’s economy strong.” For the uninitiated, that’s code for “he’s in our pocket.”
It should come as no surprise that the “people’s” Governor is exclusively doing the bidding of big business at the expense of working Californians. The real surprise is that he and his staffers are so bald-faced about it.

Schwarzenegger on Fire
From Roger Salazar, Communications Director, CDP Democratic Victory 2006:
As wildfires raged through California’s Inland Empire this weekend, Arnold Schwarzenegger rushed to the scene to prove once again that he is clearly a photo-op Governor when it comes to fire service.
As reported in Sunday’s San Bernardino Sun, Schwarzenegger met with firefighters for a staged election year photo-op, calling their efforts “heroic.”
Of course he did. Apparently, Schwarzenegger thought nobody would notice a little more hot air at the scene of a fire, but the fact is that his actions simply don’t match his words when it comes to our first responders.

Nice one from Timm Herdt at the Ventura County Star.
Don't you just love it when out-of-touch politicians like Arnold try and give advice based on their own "Richie-Rich" way of living?
Arnold better watch it -- his "Hollywood excess" is showing. What's next? Driving up in a Ford Excursion to tour an ethanol plant?

Arnold Refuses to Follow the Laws He’s Supposed to Enforce
President Bush and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger have many things in common: both are beholden to Big Money interests, both aggressively pursue an extreme right-wing agenda, and now, according to published reports last week, both are showing a willingness to ignore major laws. In President Bush’s case, he has ignored more than 750 federal laws. In Schwarzenegger’s case, the governor is ignoring both campaign finance and civil rights laws. The stories are as disgusting as they are shocking in that California’s chief executive is displaying a frightening lack of respect for the very laws he’s supposed to be enforcing.

Another Schwarzenegger Campaign Promise Swept Away . . .
From Roger Salazar, Communications Director, CDP Democratic Victory 2006
Remember what Recall Candidate for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said about Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante and campaign violations:
"Cruz Bustamante has been skirting and violating the campaign-finance laws passed by the people of California, and today was judgment day," Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement. [San Jose Mercury News; 9/23/03]
Well, today is judgment day for Governor Schwarzenegger for 143 violations of the Political Reform Act (the campaign-finance laws passed by the people of California).

A Fork in the Roadless Rule: Another Empty Election Year Switch for Schwarzenegger
From Roger Salazar, Communications Director, CDP Democratic Victory 2006
Governor Schwarzenegger once again shows that with all his twists, turns and flip-flops on environmental policy, he’s more of a gymnast than a bodybuilder. In another example of election year pandering, Schwarzenegger today is announcing his "opposition" to the Bush administration’s rollback of the roadless rule.

Team Arnold is Hitting the Road (Mariachi Style)
From Roger Salazar, Communications Director, CDP Democratic Victory 2006:
With the latest poll showing Latino voters in California overwhelmingly disapproving of Arnold Schwarzenegger Team Arnold will once again announce a new and improved version of Latinos for Arnold. The recent SJSU Poll shows that over 60 percent of Latinos disapprove of Arnold’s job as governor and a whopping 12 percent of Latinos would vote for him. Whoa, 12 percent? That’s a drop from the 19 percent in the same poll in March!
This new Latino "organization" will probably have a new banner and a nifty new name (Hispanics for Arnold), but will consist of the same old retreads and local Republican electeds who will be positioned for the cameras for this photo op never to be seen again during the campaign. (Hey, whatever happened to Abel Maldonado?)
Although it is doubtful that Arnold will say as much as he does on right-wing talk radio, this event should be good for a couple of laughs. Anyway, we have provided a few oldies, but goodies…

The Doolittles Wear Prada
Good quote from Bill Burton, Communications Director over at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, on the Doolittle campaign's extravagant shopping and gift-giving habits detailed in today's Washington Post article.
"Not to be judgmental but it appears that the Doolittles wear Prada. For those who donate to Doolittle’s campaign funds, they probably don’t know they’re really supporting the Doolittles’ shopping slush fund. After hundreds of thousands of dollars spent at Tiffany, Saks, and luxury spas and tens of thousands of dollars taken from DeLay, Abramoff and friends, it’s clearly time for a new direction."

Sssh! Arnold and Bush Together Again.
This article in the SF Chronicle, about the governor hiding the fact that he went to a White House dinner honoring Eunice Shriver and her work with the Special Olympics, shows more of the true Arnold.
Nervous about being in the same company of his incompetent buddy Bush -- and what kind of man wouldn't be bragging about this special night honoring his mother-in-law and her lifelong devotion to a worthy cause?
I wonder if Arnold be this reluctant about his $100,000 fundraiser on July 20 with George Sr.?

Arnold, The Shy? Hardly.
Rick Orlov notes in his column today that the "perpetual Kabuki dance of politics begins over debates." Arnold doesn't want to face Angelides in debate – and for that matter I don’t see him doing any open press conferences or talking to real people in question and answer meetings.
I wonder why that is?
Like his friend Bush, it would appear that Arnold can't articulate his plans for the future or explain things he has done in the past - without the benefit of a carefully scripted environment. I guess that's why Arnold hired some of Bush's old handlers. They know how to deal with this sort of problem.
It's called a tight leash.

Bush’s Big Power Grab
The July 4th Independence Day holiday was a time for our nation to celebrate our liberation from dictatorship and tyranny. But sadly, our country is living through an era where our president is doing everything he can to consolidate dictatorial power inside the White House, to the point where federal laws are now routinely ignored. The power grab is so intense, even honest Republicans in Congress are calling foul. That shows just how severe the problem is – and why in the 2006 elections it is so critical for America to elect a Democratic Congress that puts a check on the Bush administration’s power.

The Rule-inator Has Spoken!
"I totally rule it out," Schwarzenegger said in an interview with The Bee editorial board. "I will not raise taxes."
Geez, Arnold just loves those doing those interviews with the ed boards doesn't he? Must be easier for him to follow along with his script.
I know Arnold's favorite president is Nixon and I know he loved Reagan, but doesn't he at all remember George the First? Remember what happened to George One and his lips? They didn't get elected to a second term.

"I Said That?" As George Turns 60 , A Look Back at Things He Said, or Meant To Say, or Tried to Say
When it comes to regrets, boy, George has had a few, huh? And I'm not just talking about his photo-op strumming the guitar while thousands fled for their lives during Katrina.
George Bush may well end up being our most quote-worthy president -- and I mean that in a bad way. Here are 60 Bush-isms from the past year a half that had English teachers, history professors, economists, foreign policy experts and anyone who follows current events, cringing, squirming and throwing things at the TV.
Thanks to politicalhumor.com for keeping such a complete list of these truly inappropriate quotes that are so “uniquely” George Bush.
