The Ostrich Complex

We shouldn’t be surprised that a man who takes his climate advice from author Michael Crichton would insist that global warming is nothing more than a liberal delusion. But Americans aren’t buying that anymore. With 85 percent of people responding stating that global warming is likely to occur within their lifetimes, Bush can no longer claim that humans do not impact climate change.

The knee-jerk reaction Republicans have of dismissing global warming in order to advance their corporate interests no longer suffices. A recently released study shows that the Greenland and Antarctica glaciers are melting at an even faster pace than previously thought. What kind of policy is it to simply ignore global warming?

It only makes sense if you want Crawford to become beachfront property.

Abramoff Heading To The Big House

This just in . . .

If you had five years and ten months in the "Jack Abramoff Sentencing" pool - you won!

Card Finally Folds

I guess Andy Card knows when the deck is stacked against him.

In the long-standing Bush administration tradition of the lame rising to the top, Joshua Bolten, who was such an "ace" over at the Office of Management and Budget (is that an oxymoron or what?) has been named as Card's replacement.

No matter how much Bush shuffles his deck, it's still just an incompetent house of cards.

Ok - I'm now officially out of "card" analogies.

The Smirk Remains The Same: Another Bush Press Conference

Another stop on the Bush "Iraq War Is Going Great" tour - this time, one of those rare press conferences (and I think we all know why they are so few and far between).

When I tuned in this morning, Bush was in the middle of one of his rambling, goes nowhere, stop, smirk, pretend to think, then start up again, answers. Hats off to the reporters who are able to sit there without yelling out: YOU ARE NOT ANSWERING THE QUESTION!

Wow -- wouldn't it be neat if this was like American Idol and Paula, Randy and Simon could just vote Bush off once and for all.

[Big sigh]

Ok, back to reality . . .

March Madness

"Everybody excited about March Madness...the big NCAA tournament? Here's how it works: It starts at 65, then 64, then 32, then 16. It's just like Bush's approval rating."
---David Letterman

Sixteen percent may be the ultimate destination for Bush’s approval ratings. Today National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley gave a speech reaffirming Bush’s preemptive war doctrine. I’m not the only one who has trouble grasping this concept, as the White House Press Corp hammered Press Secretary Scott McClellan this morning. The first time the Bush Administration used the preemptive doctrine, they declared war on a nation on false premises, shredded our international credibility, left Iraq worse off than we found it, while committing our armed forces into a conflict that has no foreseeable victory. So yes, let’s stick with the preemptive doctrine. In doing so, Bush could even break Nixon’s record low approval ratings for his presidency.

Apparently "Operation Get My Poll Numbers Up" Was Already Taken

Who didn't see this one coming?

"U.S. launches largest Iraqi air assault since invasion"

George Bush hates bad poll numbers.

Another Bush "Crime Family" Member Surfaces

A week ago most Americans had never heard of Claude Allen. Now the former domestic policy advisor to Bush is just the latest mugshot to come out of this Republican administration. Allen's is an odd story involving an alleged discount shoplifting scheme.

President Bush was "shocked" to hear about Allen's arrest, sounding like a parent who just found out his kid has been ditching school for a month.

All this makes me wonder just what working in the Bush White House does to a person.

Antiques and Mansions and Laser Shot Shooting Simulators, Oh My

In a 1990 campaign speech, Randall "Duke" Cunningham bragged, "I am running for Congress because I am fed up with politicians who take advantage of our trust and put powerful special interests ahead of those who elected them."

Well, when you’re right, you’re right, Duke. That’s why Republicans will be voted out en masse in 2006, not just here in California but nationwide as well.

And that’s why it took San Diego prosecutors 29 pages, including colors photos of boats, homes, rugs and antiques, to detail Cunningham’s "stunning betrayal of public trust."

Included in some of the swag Cunningham had lavished upon him was a "Laser Shot Shooting Simulator." Wow. Don’t you just love the smell of an eight-year, four month sentence in the morning?

The Republicans now running for office in the CD-50 are repeating what Cunningham had to say at the beginning of his political career. But let’s not forget how that one turned out!

Click here to read the Washington Post article on Cunningham’s "bribery menu."

No Love For Arnold?

Today's Capitol Morning Report had this from the California Republican Assembly after their weekend convention in Bakersfield:

"After a vigorous debate, The CRA chose to postpone the endorsement for Governor. A motion to give the Executive Board authority to endorse the Governor at a future date based on discussions with the Governor's office was approved."

Hmmm, I wonder what that "vigorous" debate was all about? I would have loved to have been a fly on that wall (as long as there was food and drink provided).

You know, normally this sort of endorsement for an incumbent is considered a "sure thing." This doesn’t look good for Arnold. Honeymoon? Definitely over.

Bring it On Spartacus

It’s been a long hard week for our Governator. First he had to live with the fact that his own party refused to endorse his budget at the Republican State Convention. Then the new Field Poll was released, showing him vulnerable for an incumbent, with Democratic candidate Phil Angelides tied with him and Democratic candidate Steve Westly with a small lead. So he’s doing what any reasonable politician would do after a week like this: going to Ohio to dressed up as a gladiator god to participate (not fight) at the Gracie Fighting Championships pay-per-view event. Good to know that if Maximus ever attacks California Arnold will be able to defend us.
