Right Wing Christian Terrorist Bomb Plot Stopped at Falwell Funeral

by Faithful Progressive

Following my usual policy, I have not commented on the death of Rev. Jerry Falwell (my policy is to wait until someone is buried to comment on their death if my comment would be more negative than positive). But the fact that a Christian Right terrorist plot was hatched at the time of his funeral speaks volumes about his hateful legacy. That the alleged terrorist was a student at Falwell's Liberty University says even more...

I am all for religious tolerance, but one thing is clear: the followers of Jesus simply don't manufacture bombs. Nothing could be more remote from the teaching of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Further, nothing could be less associated with the reverence at the heart of the sacred than the indiscriminate violence of terrorism. Terrorism is terrorism, and it is always both morally wrong and anti-religious in the most profound sense of holding on to the idea of the sacred.

ABC NewsBomb Plot Thwarted at Falwell's Funeral
Student Arrested With Homemade Bombs, Three Other Suspects Sought:

May 22, 2007 —

Even in death, the Rev. Jerry Falwell rouses the most volatile of emotions. A small group of protesters gathered near the funeral services to criticize the man who mobilized Christian evangelicals and made them a major force in American politics -- often by playing on social prejudices.

A group of students from Falwell's Liberty University staged a counterprotest.

And Campbell County authorities arrested a Liberty University student for having several homemade bombs in his car. The student, 19-year-old Mark D. Uhl of Amissville, Va., reportedly told authorities that he was making the bombs to stop protesters from disrupting the funeral service. The devices were made of a combination of gasoline and detergent, a law enforcement official told ABC News' Pierre Thomas. They were "slow burn," according to the official, and would not have been very destructive.

"There were indications that there were others involved in the manufacturing of these devices and we are still investigating these individuals with the assistance of ATF [Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms], Virginia State Police and FBI. At this time it is not believed that these devices were going to be used to interrupt the funeral services at Liberty University," the Campbell County Sheriff's Office said in a release.

Three other suspects are being sought, one of whom is a soldier from Fort Benning, Ga., and another is a high school student. No information was available on the third suspect.

That is unbelievable! A Liberty student!? Very true- the teachings of the Prince of Peace are so distant... I am heartbroken.
Thanks for this.

Before you start calling them a christian terrorist, you might remember who the protesters are.

The Westboro Baptist Church.

Terrorism? I doubt it so much. Extreme hatred of someone distortings God's message for their own agenda? Maybe more so than terorrism.

I hope none of you are surprised by this story. Why would you be?

Is it not just like a far wing leftist to tell a story using innuendos as facts and his own opinion as validity ,to not include pertinent facts and to re write others. The so called "Terrorists had not bombs but incendiary device in which the State Police concluded would not " BLOW up" because they were made of gasoline and DETERGENT that would burn slowly, and in many opinion were to deter the hateful left from desecrating the funeral, and making a mockery of a man they loved dearly. Right or wrong the Author of this piece uses this issue to link Farwell to a terrorist but that is par for the course. This is what Faithful Progressive wrote :..... [" But the fact that a Christian Right terrorist plot was hatched at the time of his funeral speaks volumes about his hateful legacy. That the alleged terrorist was a student at Farwell's Liberty University says even more...]
by using the same association as the author the argument could be made that because Barak Obama and Congressman Ellison aligns himself with CAIR and accept money from them , they are terrorist or at least a sympathizer, as Chuck Schumer has called and still dose call CAIR a TERRORIST ORIGINATION, however I have not heard any Christian's saying that.
I have come to this blog lately often but have not posted , for such a long running Christian blog I see the same five or six people talking between themselves and often calling others who do not agree names.
I believe your advent support of the Homosexual life style has made you hater's of Christians, 87% of Americans do not support Gay Marriage, ,and although you stop short of publicly calling all those people as haters , you do believe they are as I have witnessed ,out of Political neccessisity the left thus you here at this site support Homosexual marriage and agenda not because you believe it in your heart but because you get millions of votes at one fell swoop, and for you to be able to argue this to others who may believe in the Bible you must villify or at least minimize it as being from men or make one believe that he is reading the Bible wrongly.
I do not know any Christian of any denomination or party that hates Gays, I just hear that from blogs like this Politically motivated blog, Because a person dose not agree with you that Homosexuality should be on the same level with Marriage dose not mean they hate Gays , in a matter of fact most Christian pray for Gays, but you also believe, because they must pray and do not accept out of hand that translates to hate in your book.
This sounds like that line you all like to criticize that Bush drew in the sand, ALL THAT IS NOT WITH US IS AGAINST US, and that is what your motto is all that do not embrace Homosexuality are hateful.

Fatcha Tom et al:

First, the Westboro Baptist people are extreme right and full of hate themeselves. They protested at my own church befor eI was a member there. No one reacted by building bombs--whether slow or quick burning.

Second, as the blog Bene Diction noted:

"One of the arguments at the Republican magazine Worldmagblog over this funeral bomb story is whether or not this student is a ‘terrorist.’ One commenter rationalized Uhl as ‘unfortunate.’

The FBI divides terrorism into three categories, with a working definition as follows:

There is no single universally accepted definition of terrorism. Terrorism is defined in the Code of Federal Regulations as:..the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives. (28 C.F.R. Section 0.85) (.pdf)

Whether this was a terrorist act or not, Flawell's legacy was ultimately hateful. remember when he made up hateful lies about the Clintons and put it on a video that he promoted. Wikipedia:

In 1994, Falwell promoted and distributed the straight-to-video pseudo-documentary The Clinton Chronicles: An Investigation into the Alleged Criminal Activities of Bill Clinton. The video connected Clinton to a theoretical conspiracy involving Vincent Foster, James McDougall, Ron Brown, and an alleged cocaine-smuggling operation. Despite the theory having been discredited by all major investigations, the video's sophisticated production techniques served as effective exposure, and sold over 150,000 copies.[27]

Funding for the film was provided by the Citizens for Honest Government, to which Jerry Falwell paid $200,000 in 1994 and 1995.[27] In 1995 Citizens for Honest Government paid two Arkansas state troopers to make allegations supporting the conspiracy about Vincent Foster. These two troopers were Roger Perry and Larry Patterson, who also were paid for their allegations in the Paula Jones (See: Troopergate) claims.[27] In March 2005, trooper Patterson was convicted of lying to the FBI about an unrelated incident.[28]

Falwell's infomercial for the 80-minute tape included footage of Falwell interviewing a silhouetted fake journalist who claimed to be afraid for his life. The "journalist" accused Clinton of orchestrating the deaths of several reporters and personal confidants who had gotten too close to his illegalities. However, it was subsequently revealed that the silhouetted journalist was, in fact, Patrick Matrisciana, the producer of the video and president of Citizens for Honest Government.[27] "Obviously, I'm not an investigative reporter," Matrisciana admitted [to investigative journalist Murray Waas], "and I doubt our lives were actually ever in any real danger. That was Jerry's idea to do that ... He thought that would be dramatic."[27]

In an interview for the 2005 documentary The Hunting of the President, Falwell admitted, "to this day I do not know the accuracy of the claims made in The Clinton Chronicles."[citation needed]

That says it all...
