Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

Today, let us celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the many ways that this legislation has helped improve the lives of millions of Americans, through helping many to attain economic independence and self-sufficiency. Our nation has been greatly enriched as a result of their more complete participation in our communities.

We in California are particularly proud that our Legislature has in many cases enacted even stronger standards than the ADA to ensure that persons with disabilities can live with dignity.

Senator Feinstein

I am pleased to present a newsletter from Senator Dianne Feinstein. It is vitally important that we send Senator Feinstein back to the U.S. Senate, so that she can continue to be California's voice on so many issues that are important to our state. She has stood up for Californians and our values, such as getting assault weapons off our streets, fighting for a clean environment, and continuing to protect us from identity theft.

San Diego Democrats

Good work from Jess Durfee and the San Diego Democratic Party for calling for hearings into alleged voting irregularities in the last election in that county. We must be vigilant in our insistence on election integrity.

President Bush at the G-8 Summit

I wish that everyone who voted for President Bush in 2004 could see this footage of him speaking to Prime Minister Tony Blair at the G8 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Democrats Receive Latino’s Loyalty on Immigration

In a recently released poll by the Pew Hispanic Center, the percentage of registered Latinos who identify as Democrat was 42 percent versus 22 percent who identified themselves as Republican. In addition, Democrats have a major advantage over Republicans “as the party that is perceived to have more concern for Latinos” by 46 percent to 9 percent.

House Republicans’ Immigration Field Hearings: A Sham

Over the last six years, President Bush and the Republican Congress have failed to address this country’s illegal immigration issue. These hearings by the House Republicans are a sham aimed at appealing to their right-ring base and designed to buy the House Republicans more time before November’s elections. Giving speeches and sound bites designed to scare people into supporting their position may serve their Party, but does not serve our nation. By appealing to their right wing base, the House Republicans are bucking the President and the Senate Republicans in their call for real, comprehensive reform, as embodied in the Kennedy-McCain legislation.

The President must stand up to the right-wing of his Party and lead on this issue, yet all indications are that he is wavering from a comprehensive approach and considering supporting the enforcement only method – one that will surely fail.

America deserves better than this.
