The Will and Willie Show
I had a great time doing my first interview back since my successful cancer surgery. I went on Willie Brown and comedian Will Durst's show this morning to talk politics and present Mayor Brown with a plaque honoring him for Chairing our Convention in April. I am very grateful for all that he, the Party officers and our staff did in my absence.

Chairman Torres Commemorates Gay and Lesbian Pride Month
As San Francisco and New York celebrate Gay Pride this weekend, let us all pause and reflect on the struggles for equal rights of the LGTB community. Through the years, the community has made much progress, but so much more remains to be accomplished. Let us all embrace the unique diversity of our society and celebrate how that diversity enriches our communities and our nation.

Renew the Voting Rights Act!
Republicans are holding up the renewal of the Voting Rights Act, one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation in our country. Is there nothing left that the Republican-controlled Congress doesn’t want to take away from ordinary citizens? They didn’t wait long to try to destroy the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Coretta Scott King, and all those who fought for equal rights at the polling place.

Bush Administration Hypocrisy
Another example of the Bush administration’s hypocrisy when it comes to the immigration issue: tough talk turns out to be empty rhetoric:
“The Bush administration, which is vowing to crack down on U.S. companies that hire illegal workers, virtually abandoned such employer sanctions before it began pushing to overhaul U.S. immigration laws last year, government statistics show. Between 1999 and 2003, work-site enforcement operations were scaled back 95 percent by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which subsequently was merged into the Homeland Security Department. The number of employers prosecuted for unlawfully employing immigrants dropped from 182 in 1999 to four in 2003…”

A Flag Day Message
Our national flag is a symbol of our unity and shared values.
Today, let all of our nation’s citizens pause and show respect for the flag, the symbol of all that we stand for as a country. For all of our nation’s remarkable diversity, we share a common goal of a free and just America.
Let us all pledge our allegiance to continue to uphold and fight for the precious freedoms this symbol represents to all Americans.

Gail C. Bauman
It is with great sorrow that we learned of the passing of Gail C. Bauman, mother of Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair Eric C. Bauman. Gail died the evening of Tuesday, June 6, on her 69th birthday. She was a registered nurse whose loving care helped many in their moment of need. Gail was a beautiful woman who gave love and caring without condition.
