A Wake Up Call for Our Nation
A sobering reminder of the racial and economic gaps in our country:
“Black men in the United States face a far more dire situation than is portrayed by common employment and education statistics, a flurry of new scholarly studies warn, and it has worsened in recent years even as an economic boom and a welfare overhaul have brought gains to black women and other groups.”

Great Job
Congratulations to Congress Member Barbara Lee, who successfully won approval from the House of Representatives to ban permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq.
“’In adopting this amendment, we can take the target off our troops' backs by sending a strong and immediate signal to the Iraqi people, the insurgents and the international community that the United States has no designs on Iraq,’ Lee said on the House floor.”

Governor Dean Building Our Party’s Grassroots
More evidence that Governor Dean’s commitment to building our Party’s grassroots structure so that we can be successful in all 50 states is paying off:
"…many Dean skeptics in state Democratic parties -- especially in places like New Mexico, a swing state that voted Republican in the last presidential race -- have been won over. The reason is the millions of dollars Dean has spent rebuilding Democratic organizations in places that haven't seen a coordinated Democratic effort in a long time. …'We weren't everywhere, and we weren't in the rural areas,’ Dean said in an interview. ‘You can't win the presidency unless you pay attention to the school board and the city council and the mayor's race.'"

Another Courageous Democrat Takes A Stand
I applaud Congressman Thompson for calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq:
“Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, has become the first Sacramento-area member of Congress to call for a pullout from Iraq. The Vietnam War veteran introduced last week a House resolution calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops to begin no later than Sept. 30. His resolution also would put Congress on record as opposing any permanent military installations in Iraq or any effort to control the flow of Iraqi oil. Thompson said in an interview Wednesday that he thinks the United States needs to begin withdrawing troops under these conditions in order to send a message to insurgents that ‘we don't intend to be there long.’”

On the Passing of Dana Reeve
I was saddened to learn of the untimely death of Dana Reeve, the wife of actor Christopher Reeve. She was a devoted partner of Christopher and an outspoken advocate for the disabled community.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement on her passing:
"Today, I join millions of Americans in mourning the loss of Dana Reeve. Dana and Christopher Reeve were tireless advocates for people with disabilities. Their activism and passion were an inspiration to millions. Together, they sent a powerful message that Americans who fight for what they believe in can change our country.
"Reeve's courage in the face of her husband's struggles was matched by her grace in confronting her own illness. The sudden, tragic loss of such an effective champion and committed mother is made all the more painful by our thoughts of those left behind. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Reeves' children and the rest of her family.
"In this time of great sadness, we owe it to Dana Reeve to recommit ourselves to the cause she so eloquently championed. The best way to honor her life is to continue fighting to ensure that we do everything possible to realize the full promise of scientific and medical research."

Democratic Governors In Action
I’m pleased to pass this information on about my good friend Gov. Bill Richardson, Chair of the Democratic Governor’s Association, signing innovative legislation to transition the state of New Mexico to an all paper-ballot system, using optical scanners to count the vote. I applaud Gov. Richardson for taking real action to help voters in his state feel confident that every vote is counted.
Improving voter confidence will go a long way in helping combat voter apathy, which is so important for the 2006 mid-term elections. Here in California, where we have had one election after another, addressing voter fatigue and a general distrust in the voting system is especially important.
California needs to elect a Democratic governor who can bring fresh ideas to our state. In the next few months we will be sharing some of what Democratic governors are doing in their states, to show what can be done when you have progressive, forward-thinking leadership.
Highlighting New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson
The 2000 election shook our nation’s faith in the electoral process. In 2004, inaccurate exit polling raised doubts about electronic voting machines without verifiable paper records. We know that these electronic voting machines can be manipulated to change, lose and corrupt our votes, and we must take action now to protect the security of our elections.
On Thursday, March 2, Governor Bill Richardson will take a bold step toward guaranteeing that every vote will count. He will sign legislation that will transition New Mexico to an all paper ballot voting system. The machines will provide speed and efficiency while the hand-marked paper ballots serve as the ultimate record of the will of the voters.
This legislation makes New Mexico a leader in ensuring fair, accurate, and verifiable elections. Governor Richardson proudly holds New Mexico up as a model for the rest of the country and urges citizens and officials from every state to work together, as they have in New Mexico, to protect the gift of democracy.
We hope you will join the Governor, concerned citizens and legislators as the Governor’s signature moves New Mexico forward by ensuring that our democracy continues to flourish. The live webcast will begin Thursday at 10am Pacific time and can be viewed at:

Please watch the webcast, take a moment to look at the Governor’s proposals, and sign the petition in support of Gov. Richardson’s efforts.
