Even Conservatives Not On Board With Arnold
From conservative columnist Dan Walters of the Sacramento Bee today, another case of a Republican attacking Arnold for his budget shenanigans:
"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger committed a bit of intellectual dishonesty over the weekend when he touted his proposal that $1.3 billion in sales taxes on fuel be spent on transportation projects, as voters decreed in a 2002 ballot measure. The measure allowed the state to retain the money in the general fund if budget conditions required. Citing the 2002 vote, Schwarzenegger told radio listeners that 'the politicians had other ideas. They took the money away from transportation.' What the governor left out is that he proposed and implemented a full fuel sales tax diversion, more than $1.2 billion, into the general fund in 2004-05."

Since When is Hitler Not Offensive?
Senator Rick Santorum says that he "meant no offense" when he referenced Adolf Hitler in defending his far-right colleagues who are seeking to do away with rights of the minority in the U.S. Senate. How could he compare Democrats to the one of the most murderous and evil regimes in the history of our planet and then modestly declare that he "meant no offense?" Don't forget that he criticized Democratic Senator Robert Byrd in March of this year for his comparison of Senate GOP leaders to Hilter's Nazis for attempting to block Democrats from filibustering. To be sure, Sen. Byrd's comments were wrong, but for Sen. Santorum to criticize him, then turn around and invoke Hitler in his own comments, speaks to the hypocrisy rampant among the right-wing of the GOP.
Sen. Santorum is an insult to the U.S. Senate and an insult to representative democracy.
Sen. Santorum’s Statement
"The audacity of some members to stand up and say 'How dare you break this rule' -- it's the equivalent of Adolf Hitler in 1942 saying 'I'm in Paris, how dare you invade me. How dare you bomb my city. It's mine.' This is no more the rule of the Senate than it was the rule of the Senate before not to filibuster. It was an understanding and agreement, and it has been abused."

Wal-Mart Consummates Relationship With Government
A picture tells a thousand stories - in this case, it's thousands of Wal-Mart employees who won't be getting adequate benefits. Check out this post by our friend David Sirota about the depths that some politicians will sink to kowtow to their corporate donors.

President Eisenhower Had it Right!
Although these words were said more than 50 years ago, they totally describe what is currently going on with Bush and his Republican cronies. "Tiny splinter group" indeed!
"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid." -- President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1952

Arnold on the Ropes
We just sent out my latest newsletter, which you can read here. It was truly one "from the road," as I was traveling the state talking with Democratic Clubs and speaking out in the media against Arnold. He continues his slide in the ratings as our grassroots activists continue building on their successful rallies and events. If you are not currently receiving the newsletter by email, and would like to, it's easy to sign up!

Pelosi on Social Security
Speaking of "retirement" - we must all keep up with what’s going on with Bush’s privatization plan. Nancy Pelosi’s latest statement says it all: "President’s Privatization Plan Would Be a Nail in the Coffin of Social Security"

John Burton
“Retirement” hasn’t slowed down my old friend John Burton. He totally nailed it with his quote on Arnold’s recent ridiculous comments on the Arizona Minutemen and his immigrant bashing:
"Arnold has finally picked on a group that can't picket him. If they show up, they'll be deported." (Former state Senate President Pro Tem John Burton, San Francisco Chronicle 5/4/05)
