September 29, 2004How Would You Answer The Questions? What do the following questions have in common? 1. What steps will you take to help win the war against cancer? 2. Will you oppose federal legislation creating Association Health Plans that would allow insurance companies to bypass state patient protections (such as coverage for mammography and colon cancer screenings)? 3. Would you agree to a significant increase in the federal tobacco tax and use of the funds for cancer research and programs, as recommended by the American Cancer Society? 4. Will you co-sponsor/support legislation to establish and fund the Patient Navigator, Chronic Disease, and Prevention program (HR 918/S 453) currently before Congress? 5. Because federal funds are available for fewer than one in five women who are eligible for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, would you support legislation to fully fund this program to help uninsured women gain access to screenings? 6. Will you cosponsor/support bipartisan legislation (HR 4433/ S 2461) that calls for meaningful FDA regulation of tobacco and economic assistance to tobacco growing communities as broadly supported by the public health community? 7. Will you co-sponsor/support the bipartisan legislation (HR 4097/S 2265) that assures private insurance coverage for the full-range of colon cancer screening tests as recommended by the American Cancer Society? Take a guess or read the extended entry for further details.... We're going to ask them in an effort to get candidates for elected office on the record about important cancer issues. This year the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network is working to ask the candidates questions and get them on the record before they're elected. So, what do you think of the questions? If you could ask your own cancer-related question of the candidates for President and for Congress, what would it be? Posted by CancerActionAdmin at September 29, 2004 12:34 AMComments
Why does our government continue to subsidize tobacco growers on one hand and then cut health benefits and assistance programs for the uninsured and poverty level families? It's a crime that our government leaders care more for the BIG BUCK in their pockets than the health and welfare of our American peoples. Posted by: Jan Altergott at September 29, 2004 06:36 PMWith all of the people in this country having health issues and concerns, illness can hit at any age and age is not a factor. What do you plan to do to insure the people of America have adequate Health Coverage and Proper Care for Cancer treatment and Cancer research? Although Cancer is not the only important Health issue. Cardiac Care and Diabetes rank right up there with Cancer for seeking priority. The people of this country deserve the best in care without it could cause family hardships and it is your job to make sure this happens for the American people. Where do you stand on these Health Care issues and what will you do to make sure that Health Care takes a front seat? America's needs to be put first!! Posted by: Catherine Holmes at October 4, 2004 09:50 PMWhat if we put the money and effort we have put in the Iraq war into the war on Cancer? Posted by: Iraq_more_important at October 5, 2004 01:47 PMA significant portion, if not a majority of poor health and mortality occurrences are well- understood and, sadly, self-imposed. Diabetes, heart problems and lung cancer are top ranked fatal illnesses that can be attributed to excessive food consumption and the injection of toxic chemicals found in cigarettes and artificial foods. Acid reflux and indigestion are most often a direct result of overstuffing the body. Putting "America First" requires that we look inward at our personal health choices. The human body is wonderfully created. That being said, it should not be forced to operate outside its normal and natural boundaries. Eat wholesome foods in proper amounts. Don't smoke. Don't over-eat. Restraint from excessive indulgence is the largest part of the "cure," and is the best form of prevention. True, not all cancer will be stopped this way, but a large majority can.
